Mother’s Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday of May, and this year it falls on 9 May 2021. We honour our mothers who have raised and nurtured us, our siblings and our families, with love and virtue. Today is a day that we honour them for the many great things and sacrifices they have done for us. During this MCO, we may not be able to take our mothers out to dine in restaurants or have big parties – instead, we celebrate the occasion just like we did last year, with a little cake or a special meal with our mothers and loved ones at home. Due to the restrictions imposed on inter-state and inter-district travels, many of us will probably settle for virtual meetings and parties.
No matter what, this Sunday, we remember to give extra recognition and appreciation to all mothers for their great effort in playing crucial roles in their families. All mothers wish to be with their children and grandchildren on this special day, either in-person or virtually (phone calls and video chats) and we need to spend time with them, making an effort to make the day special.
Some years ago, when I went for a homebound visit to the sick and the elderly, I met this old mother who shared with me that she had 18 children. She had expressed to me her happiness and the healthy relationship she had with them all. I really admired her for raising such responsible and loving children, who looked after her well. I am sure there are many mothers out there who have given this same love and care to their children.
“Honour your father and mother, as Yahweh your God has commanded you, so that you may have long life and may prosper in the country …” (Deuteronomy 5: 16, cf. Ephesians 6:2). Often, we think this commandment is applied only for the youngsters. It is the obligation of every individual to honour, respect and value their parents. In the midst of our busy lives, we may tend to neglect showing our love and care for them. Honouring our parents and showing them our love and appreciation should not only be done on special occasions, but at every time and every day of their lives.
Since the Coronavirus landed in our shores, we have heard that many of elderly and home bound people have been affected by this deadly virus. While celebrating this weekend with our mothers and other family members, we must still remain vigilant and be cautious in minding the necessary SOPs. We must remember the new normal way of life - observe the 3Ws (wash and sanitise our hands, wear masks, watch our distance) and to avoid the 3Cs (close, confined and congested areas) to protect those we love and care for.
During this month of the Rosary, we turn to Mother Mary, our Spiritual Mother and to St Joseph, our Spiritual Father, to intercede for us and for our families - especially for all our mothers - and be thankful to God for the gifts of our mums. We also pray for ourselves during this Rosary month, that we may grow in humility, simplicity, chastity, integrity, charity as well as in virtue, so that we may follow God’s will in loving obedience. Throughout this month of the Rosary, we pray the Rosary together with our families for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic and encourage firmness in faith, perseverance in service to our family and community, and constancy in our daily prayers.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL MOTHERS! MAY GOD BLESS YOU, ALWAYS!
